And quite frankly - the more good guys move in -  less room for the bad guys. Now that's what I'm talking about!

New York City may get all the glory but Syracuse has its own story. The story of Syracuse is intimately intertwined with the development of industry and commerce. At one time Syracuse was identified as "The City That Salt Built" although it was never totally reliant on the salt industry for its economic survival. The Erie Canal, and later the railroad, established the city as an important industrial and transportation hub.

When we consider culture, we have a Symphony founded in 1961 that is the 43rd largest orchestra in the United States. and Syracuse Stage, a professional non-profit theatre company. Of course there is the Everson Museum of Art, founded in 1897 by art historian George Fist Comfort, who also helped to found the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The Everson features works of Amercan artists from the 18th century to present. Our summer weekends are filled with festivals of all knds, including blues, jazz and several ethnic and artistic festivals. If you like good food, good music, Syracuse is the place to be on any given weekend. Let's not forget we are also home of the original Dinosaur BBQ, voted the best BBQ in the country by Good Morning America in 2009.

We are blessed with some of the best medical care in the state with five outstanding hospitals. Our own St. Joe's was just named on of the nation's top 100 "Most Wired" hospitals byHospital and Health Networks magazine. The list recognizes hospital use of technology to enhance patient's safety, clinical quality and customer service. We have an outstanding trauma center and children's hospital in Upstate Medical University, and with Crouse Irving, Community General, and the VA Hospital, there is no shortage of great medical care.

Forbes Magazine just ranked Syracuse as #4 in the top 10 best cities to raise a family and frankly we are not surprised. Syracuse is also listed as the 3rd most affordable place to purchase a home, with the median price being about $95,000. Syracuse offers a significant educational benefit with 89% of young adults having a high school degree and 23.24% of adults having at least a bachelor's degree. That's slightly higher than the national average. We have three colleges, a community college and Upstate Medical University, plus several nursing schools. We have several beautiful parks right here in the city. the Rose Garden at Thornden Park is a favorite for weddings and "The Gazebo" is a very popular place to have your wedding photos taken. Here on the north side we have one of the oldest parks in the system in Lincoln Park. One of the city's best kept secrets, it is on a lovely wooded hill with a magnificent view of the city. Once known as Robinson's Woods with stories of buried treasure there. There has been a pool in Lincoln Park since the early years of the 20th century. The modern softball field used to be a 'lakelet', with a recreation house next to it that resembled a Japanese pagoda, built around 1915. Check it out as a great location to photograph the city!

Another outstanding resource is Onondaga Lake. Did you know that from Onondaga Lake the NYS Barge Canal you can go to Chicago by boat and grab a slice of deep dish pizza? In fact, from Onondaga Lake you can go anywhere in the world that can be reached by water. A county park and trails almost completely surround the lake (the trail system will be completed soon). What a wonderful resource for our city along with numerous other lakes and streams nearby.

Downtown offers a great farmer's market from June to October featuring 50 farmers and produce dealers. We also have some of the most beautiful architecture in New York State. Hanover Square in downtown is actually a triangle at the intersection of Warren, Water and East Genesee Street. The square, which includes seventeen historic buildings, was the first commercial district in Syracuse. Architectural styles include Second Empire, Louis Sullivan, and Federal, Federal Italianate, Commercial, Art Deco, Renaissance Revival and Neo-Classical an outstanding collection.

There are so many things about Syracuse to like. I am especially fond of being able to drive just 10 minutes to be in the countryside, surrounded by some of the most beautiful scenery in the state, full of rolling hills, green meadows, and nearby state and county parks. It is just a short ride to downhill and cross country skiing, boating and many other winter and summer sports.

There is no way in this small space I can tell you about all the wonderful things Syracuse has to offer: The Zoo, the NY State Fair, the Canal Museum, outstanding architecture, Jazz Fest, and my favorite; milk in glass bottles. How lucky we are to have this wonderful city to live, work and play in - so get out, walk around and look at all that Syracuse has to offer. You will be amazed!
